Lack of public transport clogs traffic

KUWAIT CITY, July 6, (Agencies): With the start of the second phase of the return to normalcy, the streets of Kuwait witnessed the return of traffic congestion in the absence of public transportation, which raised questions about the feasibility of measure to ban public transport, considering it is one of the solutions to the current traffic congestion.

In light of government suspending mass transportation until further notice, as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of coronavirus, employees have been facing challenges to find transportation since last Tuesday, leaving them with no choice than to search for means of reaching their workplaces; thus private cars are becoming mass transportation rides.

Away from the traffic congestion caused by these vehicles in most of the streets across the country, especially in the morning or afternoon, as people return to their homes from work, it was noted they neither adhere to the health requirements nor application of social distancing rules.

However, mass public transportation guarantees greater social distancing and ensures the utmost levels of prevention and health precautions. Here, we question the feasibility of not giving public transportation the green light, especially with the start of the second phase and the return of large numbers of employees to their duties in various economic activities, noting public transportation will contribute to reduce the traffic congestion and ensure physical distance between passengers.
