Up to KD 5,000 fine for clicking pictures of funeral in cemetery

KUWAIT CITY, March 14: Dr. Faisal Al Awadi, the Director of Funerals Department of the Kuwait Municipality stated that the administration will start imposing fines up to KD 5,000 on those who are found vandalizing graves and those who photograph during funerals in the cemetery.

There has been great anger aroused among the families of deceased and mourners as large crowds enter to cover funerals of politicians, athletes, celebrities and others. This type of phenomena lacks respect and sanctity of the dead and cemeteries.

The Director of Municipality, Ahmed Al Manfouhi in the past had issued a circular to take legal measures to prevent those taking photographs in cemeteries using all kinds of cameras. Article 3 states that the graves may not be used for anything other than the purpose of which they are intended. Article 8 states sanctity of the dead must be preserved during transporting, washing, shrouding and burial, if anyone violated these two articles shall be punished with a fine not less than 2,000 dinars and not more than 5,000 dinars

The security authorities are continuing their investigations after receiving a report of suspected deliberate desecration of three tombstones of the late Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad, Sheikh Sa’ad Al-Abdullah and Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad inside the Sulaibikhat cemetery, reports Al-Rai daily quoting reliable sources. The sources indicated personnel from the Criminal Evidences Department have lifted fingerprints from the graves belonging to more than one person and the competent authorities are expected to summon them to hear their statements.

The sources added, the Sulaibikhat cemetery has no surveillance cameras to ensure oversight and follow-up, especially since hundreds of people enter it on a daily basis. The sources revealed the security authorities have begun summoning and hearing the testimonies of the workers in the cemetery, especially since the clip circulating in the social media of the desecrated graves was made by one of the workers
