Court postpones hearing on appeal against ruling in National Guard arms theft case

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 13: The Court of Cassation postponed until Nov 14 the hearing on the appeal against the ruling of the Appeals Court, which upheld the verdict of a lower court in the case of theft of weapons and ammunition from the National Guard, in which 18 citizens, including an employee of the National Guard and a woman, are involved.

Case files indicate that the Court of Appeals upheld the ruling of the First Instance Court to imprison a sergeant in the National Guard for 15 years and dismiss him from his post, as well as impose a fine of KD 5,000 each along with a defendant who was sentenced to 13 years in prison, another who was sentenced to two years in prison, and one more who was sentenced to three years and four months in prison.

During the trial, the eight defendants were questioned on various charges — embezzling public money and possessing arms and ammunition without a license for the purpose of trafficking, but they denied all the charges. The accused were arrested in July and August, after the National Guard discovered that 38 weapons and ammunition were missing from its arsenal. Investigations revealed that one of the accused — a military officer — was behind the theft and selling of the stolen items to another defendant who brokered a sale deal with the rest of the defendants.
