Kuwait reaffirms commitment to support quake-affected peoples of Syria and Turkiye

BRUSSELS, March 20: After the earthquake hit Syria and Turkiye in February, Kuwait, with its various official bodies, and at the popular level, rushed to provide various aspects of support to the earthquake victims in the two countries, Kuwait’s Ambassador to the EU, Belgium and NATO, Nawaf Al-Enezi said here Monday. Speaking at an International Donors’ Conference to support the people in Turkiye and Syria affected by the recent earthquakes, he noted that this action comes in line with one of the pillars of Kuwait’s foreign policy, which is standing with those afflicted by natural disasters and commitment to support joint international efforts in the relief and humanitarian fields.

Kuwait has carried out a process of monitoring the urgent humanitarian needs on the ground, based on the reports contained in the UN appeal after the earthquake occurred, including the sectors most in need, in addition to what was mentioned in the details of the emergency response plan was launched by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, he noted.

Ambassador Al-Enezi announced that Kuwait has provided, through the government and through popular contributions and the contributions of the civil and private sector and civil society institutions, an amount of USD 97.7 million, which was divided equally to support humanitarian efforts after the earthquakes in Syria and Turkiye.

Kuwait was keen to distribute these contributions among various specialized international agencies, UN and non-UN, operating in the field, to ensure a rapid and consistent response to reach the largest number of affected people urgently. Kuwait will follow up the course of this contribution with those agencies to ensure that it reaches swiftly to its beneficiaries. Kuwait also organized an air bridge that included 17 aircraft loaded with tons of in-kind aid, medical and relief equipment necessary, in addition to dispatching rescue and emergency teams that contributed to rescuing the afflicted and trapped under the rubble.

The European Commission and the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the EU are hosting the one-day meeting. The Donors’ Conference has gathered more than 60 EU Member States, candidate countries and potential candidates, neighboring and partner countries, G20 members – except for Russia – Member States of the Gulf Cooperation Council, as well as the UN, international organizations, humanitarian actors and international and European financial institutions (KUNA)
