Woman’s body found in jaws of 13ft Florida alligator identified
In a harrowing incident in Florida, law enforcement authorities have reported the demise of a 13-foot alligator, which was discovered with the remains of a woman in its grasp.
A vigilant witness recounted how he stumbled upon the massive alligator in a canal in Largo, clutching a lower torso in its powerful jaws. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office later confirmed the unfortunate victim to be 41-year-old Sabrina Peckham, whose life was tragically cut short.
The circumstances surrounding this shocking discovery are currently under investigation.
The incident unfolded when deputies received a distressing call at 13:50 local time last Friday, reporting a body in the waterway. Jamarcus Bullard, who was en route to a job interview, provided a chilling account of the encounter, noting that at first glance, he mistook the horrifying sight for a mannequin. He shared with local broadcaster Fox 13, “I noticed it had a body in its mouth – like a lower torso – so once I saw that I ran straight to the fire department.”
Bullard, having never witnessed a live alligator before, initially found the sight intriguing. However, the reality of the situation quickly sank in as he realized the gravity of the situation. He described the alligator as pale and white, firmly clamped onto its grim discovery, swimming backwards to the depths of the canal.
A fundraising effort has been initiated by Ms. Peckham’s family in her memory. They revealed that she was residing in a homeless camp near the wooded area at the time of the incident.
Breauna Dorris, who identified herself as the victim’s daughter, shared her grief on Facebook, speculating that her mother might have been on her way to or from her campsite near the creek when the alligator launched its fatal attack. Dorris wrote, “No one deserves to die like this.”
Authorities acted quickly, euthanizing the alligator and extracting it from the waterway. A police dive team later recovered Ms. Peckham’s remains. The Medical Examiner’s Office is yet to determine the exact cause of death.
Local residents expressed shock over the incident, acknowledging that while they had previously spotted smaller alligators in the vicinity, the size of the reptile involved in this tragedy was unprecedented. Concerned resident Jennifer Dean remarked, “It’s crazy. My kids walk by there all the time. So it’s really scary. I’ve seen four or five-foot gators but nothing that big.”
Jamarcus Bullard, profoundly affected by the incident, contemplated altering his commute to avoid potential risks. He stated, “I’m going to get me a bike or start catching the bus to work. They have small little gates, but somebody died.”
