Blanket of love: Jimmy Carter’s moving tribute to Rosalynn’s legacy at her memorial service

WASHINGTON, Nov 29, (Agencies): Jimmy Carter is maintaining a close connection with his late wife, Rosalynn Carter, even in her absence. On Tuesday, the 99-year-old former president of the United States participated in the public memorial service for Rosalynn, who passed away on Nov 19. The somber ceremony took place at the Glenn Memorial Church at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Marking his first public appearance since September, Carter, who has been under at-home hospice care since February, was gently wheeled into the ceremony. Draped in a blanket featuring images of him and his wife’s faces, Carter entered the church, symbolizing a poignant tribute to their enduring love story.

The blanket’s intricate stitching held significance beyond their personal connection, incorporating depictions of Plains, Georgia, their cherished hometown. Adorned with images of plains and dogwood flowers native to the Peach State, the blanket bore the touching inscription “est. 1885,” a nod to the year of their enduring connection.

Seated at the front of the church, Carter absorbed the poignant ceremony, featuring heartfelt performances by Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood. His presence marked a solemn occasion, further accentuated as some of the Carter family’s children and grandchildren took to the podium to share their memories.

Support for the family patriarch was evident, with Carter being comforted by his daughter, Amy, and son, Chip, who held his hand throughout the ceremony. Despite his emotional state, Carter did not address the gathering.

The ceremony drew a distinguished audience, with all surviving first ladies—Michelle Obama, Melania Trump, Hillary Clinton, and Laura Bush—in attendance. Current First Lady Dr Jill Biden, accompanied by US President Joe Biden, occupied the front row. The gathering also included Vice President Kamala Harris, first gentleman Doug Emhoff, Georgia’s US senators, and Gov Brian Kemp and his wife.

Notably absent from the ceremony were former US presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump.
