Chennai schools declare holiday amidst heavy rains: What you need to know

CHENNAI, India, Nov 29: Due to persistent heavy rainfall affecting various parts of Chennai, the Tamil Nadu government has declared a school holiday on Thursday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy rain at isolated locations across several districts in Tamil Nadu, including Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, and Thoothukudi, as well as in Puducherry and Karaikal. This anticipated weather pattern is expected to persist for three consecutive days, beginning tomorrow.

An orange alert has been issued in Chennai and its neighboring districts, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall.

The Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) in Chennai has issued a warning of intensified rainfall in the coming days, specifically from December 2 to 4. The weather department has identified a well-marked low-pressure area in the Southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjacent South Andaman Sea, which is expected to evolve into a cyclonic storm in the coming days.

Responding to the situation, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has communicated through various channels, including X, to reassure that resident officials are actively addressing the sudden downpour. In consideration of the heavy rain and the weather forecast, the corporation has advised residents to remain indoors for their safety.

As a precautionary measure, fishermen have been strongly advised against venturing into the sea during this period due to the expected ‘rough to very rough’ sea conditions in these areas. The local authorities are actively monitoring and managing the situation on the ground.
