Assassination Attempt on Former President Trump
6:02 p.m.: Chaos Erupts as Trump Takes the Stage
Thousands of people gathered to see former President Trump speak at an event, unaware that they would soon witness a shocking and terrifying scene. At 6:02 p.m., Trump walked onto the stage, and within minutes, the first assassination attempt on a president in over 40 years would unfold.
The Shooter is Spotted
A video posted to TikTok captured the moment when a shooter was seen on the rooftop of a nearby glass and plastics company, just 450 feet from the stage. Riley Goers, who took the video, noticed the gunman at least 2 minutes before shots were fired. The video showed the shooter, armed with a rifle, and two officers nearby, unaware of the danger.
Security Alerts and Response
According to a senator briefed by the Secret Service, a report of a suspicious person was made an hour before the shooting. The Secret Service alerted snipers 9 minutes before Trump took the stage. As the event unfolded, attendees also spotted the gunman, who was seen behaving suspiciously near the metal detectors at the entrance.
The Shooting
At 6:11 p.m., Trump turned his head to reference a chart on stage, and moments later, popping sounds erupted. Nine shots were heard over 16 seconds, ending with one person killed, the former president wounded, and two rally goers seriously injured. The gunman was dead on the rooftop.
Heroic Acts
Among the crowd, a 50-year-old firefighter, Cory Comparator, a father of two daughters, was killed shielding his family from the gunfire. Two other men, David Dutch, a 57-year-old marine veteran, and James Copenhaver, a 74-year-old man, were also hit by gunfire and are in serious condition.
Investigation and Security
The FBI is now leading the investigation into the assassination attempt and security at the event. The incident has raised questions about the effectiveness of security measures and the ability to prevent such attacks in the future.
