New video shows moments leading up to D’Vontaye Mitchell’s death
New Surveillance Video Reveals Disturbing Details in Devonte Mitchell’s Death
A new surveillance video has been released, showing the final moments of Devonte Mitchell’s life, and it’s sparking outrage and calls for justice. The 36-year-old man died in late June after a disturbance at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. According to the County Medical Examiner, Mitchell’s cause of death was determined to be a homicide due to "restraint asphyxia" and toxic effects of cocaine and methamphetamine.
The Video Shows a Harrowing Scene
The new video, narrated by Mitchell’s family attorney, shows the events leading up to his death. It appears to show Mitchell running through the hotel lobby and into the women’s bathroom, likely as a result of a mental health episode. As he’s escorted out, a security guard can be seen punching him. Another camera captures Mitchell being dragged through the hotel doors by multiple employees.
Employees’ Actions Deemed Excessive
The video then shows an employee hitting Mitchell repeatedly with a broom, followed by another employee striking him with what the lawyer claims was a baton. The employees then force Mitchell face down to the ground, where he remains until his death.
Family Demands Justice
Mitchell’s widow is speaking out, angered by the new video and demanding justice. "I have to watch his life being taken for nothing," she said. "We’re just fighting for basic, simple justice here."
Calls for Immediate Charges
The family’s attorneys are urging authorities to take immediate action and charge those responsible for Mitchell’s death. "When you hear people say, ‘Oh, all we did was hold him down,’ none of that is true," said the attorney. "This was a violent, excessive use of force that led to Devonte’s death."
Hotel and Authorities Respond
The Hospitality company, which operates the Hyatt property, has issued a statement saying it is conducting its own investigation, which has resulted in the termination of several associates. The Milwaukee DA has also announced that they are reviewing the case, but no one has been charged.
