Tropical storm Debbie is strengthening in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to make landfall tomorrow as a hurricane. Mandatory evacuations are already underway, and residents are bracing for potentially catastrophic flooding in Georgia and South Carolina.
Meanwhile, on the track, Team USA’s Noah Ly has set a new gold standard, winning the men’s 100-meter event in a stunning photo finish. This victory marks a significant milestone for American athletics, ending a 20-year drought.
U.S. Southeast Bracing for Hurricane Landfall
In a separate briefing, NBC’s Marissa Para reports on the storm’s potential impact: "The storm has already brought heavy rain to the Gulf Coast, and winds are currently clocking at around 65 miles per hour. Mandatory evacuations are in effect for at least seven counties, and the storm is expected to continue strengthening before making landfall."
As the clock ticks down to a potentially record-breaking storm surge, residents of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina are taking precautions and boarding up their homes. NBC Meteorologist Angie Lman provides updates on the storm’s trajectory: "Debbie will make landfall in the Big Ben region of Florida by late morning, and then begin to slow down, bringing historic amounts of rain to the region."
Vice President Kamala Harris on the Verge of Making a Critical Decision
Closer to home, NBC News reports that Vice President Kamala Harris is closing in on her decision to name a new running mate. Sources confirm that Harris has met with at least three contenders, including Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota, and Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania.
While the decision is expected within the next two days, the vice president’s team is keeping mum about the details of the meeting. Meanwhile, Harris and her current running mate, President Biden, are embarking on a seven-state battleground tour beginning Tuesday.
