Man charged with antisemitic hate crime near NYC synagogue
Anti-Semitic Hate Crime Caught on Camera in Brooklyn
A shocking video has emerged showing a group of men wearing traditional Jewish clothing being attacked by a man who shouted "Free Palestine" and "Do you want to die" as he lunged at them with a knife. The 22-year-old suspect was later charged with attempted murder and a hate crime, and the victim is currently in stable condition in the hospital.
The Attack
The incident occurred on a Brooklyn street, where the group of men, all dressed in traditional Jewish clothing, were walking when they were approached by the attacker, who was wearing purple clothing. According to the complaint, the attacker stabbed one of the men in the abdomen before fleeing the scene.
Rise in Anti-Semitic Incidents
This is just the latest in a wave of alleged anti-Semitic attacks to strike New York City. In June, a man was caught on camera leading an anti-Semitic chant on a New York Subway, and just weeks ago, a man drove his car into a group of students outside a Brooklyn Yeshiva while shouting an anti-Semitic slur.
National Trend
The Jewish Community is under assault, with the number of anti-Semitic incidents skyrocketing nationwide since October. According to police, Jews are being targeted simply because they look Jewish or wear Jewish garb, with their actions being ascribed to the state of Israel.
Condemnation
"This is a growing type of anti-Semitism that we’re seeing in this country," said a spokesperson for the Jewish Community. "When Jews are targeted just because of their faith or their ethnicity, it’s unacceptable and it’s time for society to take a stand against it."
Sentencing
In a related development, a former Cornell student was sentenced to 21 months in prison for making anti-Semitic threats against students on campus. The sentencing comes as the community continues to grapple with the rise in anti-Semitic incidents.
