Powerful storms bring historic rainfall and flooding to the Northeast
East Coast Under Water: Record Rainfall Causes Widespread Flooding and Disruption
The Northeast United States woke up to a grim reality this morning, with back home parts of the region underwater following powerful storms that brought historic rainfall to the area. Connecticut was the hardest hit, with over 10 inches of rain falling in just 12 hours, causing what is being described as a "one in a thousand year flood".
Flooding Reaches Catastrophic Levels
The fast-rising water quickly submerged cars, washed out roads, and stranded people in some areas. Rescue crews were unable to safely move in and help those in need, as the water levels continued to rise. The threat for showers and storms continues to linger in the East today, with Michelle Gman from NBC News providing the latest updates.
Expect More Rain Today
"We’re going to see more of the same," Gman said, "the heaviest rain that fell yesterday into this morning has moved off, but we still have that cold front that’s going to linger right near the coast, tapping into some tropical moisture. We do have the threat for still some downpours… we’re looking pretty good at this hour, but we do have some heavy downpours where you see those darker colors along the Great Lakes here, and portions of Massachusetts too."
Flash Flooding Likely Throughout the Day
Gman emphasized that localized flash flooding is likely today, and that the slow-moving cold front is to blame. The same front that kept Hurricane Ernesta away from the East Coast is now tapping into tropical moisture, causing heavy downpours and flash flooding.
Scattered Storms Expected
For today, Michelle Gman predicted scattered showers and storms, with the chance for heavy rain in Northern New England. "By tomorrow, we’re going to see much better in many spots, but still seeing showers lingering across Northern New England… by this afternoon, we’re expecting the chance for some strong to severe storms with daytime heating once that sun does come out and start to heat things up."
Heat Wave Continues in the South
Meanwhile, a record-breaking heat wave has gripped the South, with temperatures expected to soar into the triple digits today. Cities such as Dallas, Phoenix, and Miami are all experiencing temperatures that feel like over 110°F, making it extremely dangerous and uncomfortable.
Stay Safe
As the East Coast and South continue to deal with severe weather and heat, residents are urged to take precautions and stay informed about the latest updates and alerts.
