Brendan Rodgers reacts to Celtic's 7-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in UCL
Celtic Crushed by ruthless Bayern Munich in Champions League
Disastrous Defeat: Celtic Go Down 4-1 in Bundesliga
Celtic suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich in their Champions League tie, courtesy of two penalties in the first half and an absolutely stunning goal from the German giants. The young talent from outside the box deceived the Celtic goalkeeper, with an incredible finish, making it 3-1 to Bayern by halftime.
Things only got worse for the Scottish club, with a loose touch from daan followed by a firm shot into the net, putting Bayern up 4-1 before the visitors knew what was happening.
Rogers’ tactics were heavily scrutinized in the aftermath of the game, with some suggesting that his team was simply beaten by a team with "ruthless quality" and that Celtic’s usual tactics of parking the bus and waiting for counter-attacks didn’t pay off this time around.
The Verdict: a Wake-Up Call for Celtic
Michael Bridge, speaking on the match, pointed out that while Celtic lost to a better team, they also lacked a certain "nastiness" and "ruthlessness" in their approach, something that will be important if they hope to compete in the Champions League. Bridge also hinted that Rogers’ tactics were open to question, especially considering his European record with Celtic, which is pretty dismal, with four of Celtic’s five heaviest defeats coming under his management.
The new Champions League format presents Celtic with an opportunity to recover from this setback and still make an impact on the competition. They face Atalanta away and Leipzig at home, and, on paper, their fixtures look relatively manageable.
Sutton’s Jibe
The defeat sparked a fresh round of criticism from former player Chris Sutton, with Chris Boyd, a noted Aberdeen fan, catching heat from Sutton. Boyd’s tweet about being part of the "yellow wall" in Dortmund did little to ease the ire of Celtics’ fans.
As one might expect, Aberdeen fans are fuming, while some have credited the Irish manager with some much-needed reality checks.
The stage is set for Celtic to bounce back and prove their doubters wrong. But for now, Rogers and his team are facing some tough questions about their tactics and, indeed, their European pedigree.
