Twenty years ago, Iowa State’s Dr. Lisa Schy Moore pioneered the idea of planting Prairie strips on farmland, working closely with farmers to improve the land and reduce environmental damage. Initially, many farmers were skeptical, but statistical data finally convinced them of the effectiveness of this new approach.
The benefits are striking: converting just 10% of a field to Prairie strips can reduce soil erosion by a remarkable 95%, while fertilizer runoff can be cut by as much as 90%. But the real power lies beneath the surface, where the complex root system of the Prairie helps stabilize the soil and keeps fertilizers from seeping into streams, ultimately polluting the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico.
Organic farmer Paul Muggy has been a pioneer in adopting this approach, seeing the benefits firsthand. "I’m entrusted with this land for a short period, and it’s our opportunity to care for the land and the communities downstream from us," he says. His Prairie strips not only attract beneficial insects that protect his crops but also attract high school seniors eager to take their senior pictures amidst the picturesque landscapes.
Muggy’s neighbors have also taken notice, appreciating the positive impact of his efforts. "It’s rewarding for the people and the land," he notes.
