12-year-old dies after falling through an ice pond in New York
Tragedy at Washington Park Lake: Two Young Lives Lost in the Ice
Yesterday afternoon, the community was shaken to its core as two 11-year-old students from North Albany Middle School, part of the Albany City School District, fell through the ice at Washington Park Lake. Responding to a 4:35 p.m. report, Albany Police and Albany firefighters rushed to the scene, rescuing the 11-year-old girl, who was treated on the spot and taken to Albany Med.
Underwater Recovery Team’s Grueling Search
After the initial rescue, members of the New York State Police underwater recovery team spent multiple hours searching for the missing 12-year-old boy. It wasn’t until just before 7:30 p.m. that they located his body in the icy waters.
A Heroic Act of bravery
According to Albany Police’s investigation, the 12-year-old boy had tried to walk across the frozen lake towards the lake house, but unfortunately, he fell through the ice. The 11-year-old girl, who was reportedly watching from the edge, witnessed the tragedy and took quick action. She followed the boy’s path, trying to rescue him, but she too fell through the ice. Her heroic attempt to save her classmate was a testament to the bravery and compassion of a true friend.
Outpouring of Sympathy from the School Community
The district has issued a statement on its website, expressing their deepest sympathies to the families of the two students: "Our hearts go out to the families of these students at this incredibly difficult time. This is a terrible tragedy, and we are grieving as a school community." The statement added that North Albany Middle School would have crisis services available for students or any school district employee who may need support tomorrow.
Crisis Support and Safety Measures
As a precautionary measure, at least two safety signs have been erected around Washington Park Lake, warning of the dangers of crossing the ice. North Albany Middle School will provide crisis services tomorrow for any student or employee who may need them.
Name and Details of the Victims to Remain Confidential
Albany Police have announced that, out of respect for the families, they will not release the names of the two victims, as they are juveniles.
