A Damaged Institution: The Tale of Teddy and Andy Leonard, Owners of the Beloved Seafood Restaurant in Malibu, California

In the midst of devastation, two men, Teddy and Andy Leonard, stood strong, their spirits unbroken despite the loss of their beloved seafood restaurant, an institution in Malibu, California. The restaurant, which has stood the test of time for decades, was ravaged by the recent Palisades fire, leaving a trail of destruction and uncertainty. Tonight, they joined us to share their story, and we are grateful to have them.

As we sat down with Teddy and Andy, it was clear that their focus was on their employees, who have been their top priority. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support them, and the owners are working tirelessly to ensure their well-being.

"We’re just trying to take care of our employees," they echoed in unison, their voices filled with concern. "We’re blessed to have such an amazing support system, from our children to our community."

The devastating fire, which seemed to come out of nowhere, left the duo with no choice but to flee for their lives. "It was like a horror movie," Andy said, still trying to process the events. "The fire was on the other side of Tank Canyon Boulevard, and the wind wasn’t doing anything unusual. The next thing we know, there’s smoke in the restaurant, and we’re getting out, trying to survive."

Teddy added, "We almost lost one of our managers, who was trapped in the restaurant. It was a miracle she got out safely."

As the couple reflected on the past, they revealed that they had faced similar challenges before, including a close call in 1993 when their napkins and cups on the patio spontaneously combusted. A helicopter rescue team was called in, and the restaurant was saved. However, even with that experience, they had never expected an event like this to happen.

With their business and home destroyed, the future is uncertain. "We’re trying to work with the state parks to rebuild on the same site," Teddy explained. "But, to be honest, it’s hard to know if we’ll have a home to return to."

Despite the obstacles, their community has come together to support them. A message to the outpouring of love and support: "It’s been an amazing outpouring of love and support from everyone in our community. We’re grateful for it."

As we bid farewell to Teddy and Andy, our hearts go out to them and their employees. We are committed to staying updated on their journey to rebuild and look forward to sharing their progress with you in the days to come.
