The Concerns Surrounding a Nomination to Secretary of Defense

As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, I am compelled to express my grave concerns regarding the nomination of a certain individual to serve as Secretary of Defense. The position is a critical one, requiring a leader of unparalleled experience, wisdom, and character to lead a department of 35 million service members and civilians, with an annual budget of nearly $900 billion.

Unfortunately, the individual in question falls short of the mark. In fact, numerous public reports, including their own writings, raise serious concerns about their conduct, including disregarding the laws of war, financial mismanagement, racist and sexist remarks, and allegations of alcohol abuse, sexual assault, and sexual harassment.

Disqualifying Conduct

As a military leader, the individual’s writings and alleged conduct would disqualify them from holding any leadership position in the military, much less being confirmed as Secretary of Defense. While they have denied many of the allegations, the totality of the evidence raises serious questions about their fitness for the position.

Concerns about Diversity

Furthermore, the individual’s comments about diversity and inclusion in the military are concerning. They believe that diversity initiatives have weakened the military, citing the importance of unity over diversity. They have also expressed opposition to women serving in combat roles, stating that the military was more effective in the past when it was not as diverse. This stance raises questions about how they would approach issues of inclusion and diversity in the military if confirmed.

Disregard for International Law

The individual’s disregard for international law and the law of war is also alarming. They have advocated for the pardoning of military members who have committed war crimes and have expressed support for interrogation methods that have been defined as torture. This stance raises serious questions about how they would approach international relations and human rights if confirmed.

Leadership and Management

The individual’s leadership and management skills are also concerning. They have been criticized for their management of Veterans for Freedom and Concerned Veterans for America, two organizations they led, which experienced financial difficulties and debt.

Partisan Politics

Finally, the individual’s comments and writings have expressed a clear disregard for the notion of bipartisan politics. They have referred to many Democrats as "foes" and have stated that they agree on nothing else. This tone is unacceptable and raises serious questions about how they would approach working with Democrats in the military if confirmed.

In conclusion, the individual in question lacks the character, composure, and competence to serve as Secretary of Defense. I strongly urge the committee to reject this nomination and select a candidate who is better suited to lead our nation’s defense.
