TikTok’s Uncertain Future: Creators Prepare for the Worst

As the world waits with bated breath for the Supreme Court’s decision on the fate of TikTok, three creators are nervously evaluating their next move. For some, the uncertainty surrounding the popular social media platform has already taken a toll on their financial futures.

Take Rita Colagone, a full-time personal shopper who earns at least $3,000 a month live streaming in big department stores. She credits TikTok for allowing her to "be an entrepreneur and work for myself, it’s allowed me the freedom of time." But what if the platform is banned?

Shelby LaTimore, a third-grade teacher, has also reaped the benefits of TikTok’s popularity. She charges her students "Latimore Bucks" to teach financial literacy and has earned over six figures from the platform. It’s enabled her to "help out my family members, help out like here in the school, and fund field trips."

Jose, a creator who goes by a pseudonym online, teaches online safety and hosts global scavenger hunts. He fears a ban could derail his chances of making a living from his content. "I’m worried that this TikTok ban is going to potentially derail that to some degree."

The uncertainty is evident, but some creators are not taking anything for granted. In a 2024 survey by the Influencer Marketing Hub, TikTok emerged as the top platform for influencer marketing, with brands relying heavily on its vast user base. If banned, creators would lose a whopping $1.3 billion in the first month alone. The Department of Justice has given ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, until January 19th to sell or transfer the app to an American-owned company.

For some creators, the uncertainty has prompted the creation of backup plans. For example, Colagone has started a YouTube channel and an Instagram account, which she uses to supplement her income. "Do you have a plan B or backup plan?" she asks, acknowledging the uncertain future.

As the world waits for the Supreme Court’s decision, the fate of TikTok hangs in the balance. Will it be allowed to continue, or will it be banned? For creators like Colagone, LaTimore, and Jose, the uncertainty is a heavy burden to bear. As one TikTok user aptly put it, "I don’t want to be dramatic, but… TikTok has definitely changed my life."
