Back Pages: Newcastle’s Thrilling Victory, Harry Kane’s Potential Return, and More
Welcome to Back Pages, the sports news program on Sky Sports, where we bring you a first look at the sports stories making the evening’s newspapers. Joining us are David Jones, our athletics and football correspondent, and Charlotte Duerden, football reporter for The Times.
We kick off with the headlines from the newspapers. The Sun leads with "Wembley Ho!" as Newcastle United surpass Arsenal, with goals from Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon securing a 2-0 win and a place in the Carabao Cup Final. The Mail’s front page shows Arsenal’s humiliation with the headline "Humbled Arsenal Sent Packing".
The Telegraph’s headline reads "Party Time" as Newcastle’s Murphy and Gordon lead the charge to the Carabao Cup Final. And The Times reports on the celebrating Newcastle players, with the subheading "United’s Mission 21 Title Plan Unfolds".
Newcastle’s Thrilling Victory
David, what’s your take on Newcastle’s dominant performance tonight? "Newcastle’s front three, Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, and Jacob Murphy, were ruthless in their attacking play. They wanted it more, and it showed. Arsenal, on the other hand, seemed to be phased by the electric atmosphere at St. James’ Park."
Charlotte, did you agree with that assessment? "Yes, I think Arsenal struggled to cope with the intense atmosphere. They lacked the clinical edge that we’ve seen from them in recent times. Newcastle, meanwhile, fully deserved their victory, especially given their dominant performance in the second half."
Harry Kane’s Potential Return
David, you’re a footy expert – what’s your take on Harry Kane’s potential return to the Premier League? "I don’t think Harry Kane will trigger his release clause just yet. He’s happy at Bayern Munich, and his goal-scoring form has been brilliant. However, it’s not entirely impossible that he might come back to the Premier League in the long term. Manchester United and Chelsea have been linked with him in the past, and if he’s still scoring goals, expect the Premier League clubs to come calling."
Extra Time in the Carabao Cup?
Charlotte, what do you make of the proposal to scrap extra time in the Carabao Cup? "I don’t see the harm in it, but it’s not a fundamental change to address the player welfare concerns. The number of matches and the congested fixture list remain a bigger issue. Still, it’s a small step in the right direction, and it might appease some of the clubs and players."
That’s all from us for now. Join us again on Thursday night, when our guests will be Jonathan Wilson from The Guardian and Mark Ogden from ESPN. Until then, thank you for watching Back Pages!
