Residents Rush to Safety
In San Diego, residents grabbed their belongings and rushed outdoors, with some even grabbing their children and seeking shelter from the falling debris. One mother, who was in downtown San Diego, was shaken awake by the quake and recalled her memories of similar tremors back home in Mexico City. "Oh my god, that was so scary!" she exclaimed.
Aftermath Reported
As the shaking stopped, residents began to take stock of the aftermath. Damage was reported across the region, with cracks in buildings, widening of a patio in Chula Vista, and rocks littering a highway in Santa Isabel. A liquor store in Julian documented the damage, with bottles of whiskey, scotch, and other drinks falling off shelves.
Assessing the Damage
Governor Gavin Newsom posted on social media, saying he has been briefed on the quake and his team is assessing whether emergency response is needed. Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones noted that there was a 5% chance of a much larger aftershock, but so far, only small aftershocks have been reported.

"There haven’t been any additional aftershocks here, but according to the San Diego Union Tribune, there have been about four within 90 minutes of the 5.2 magnitude quake, ranging in size from 3.0 to 3.9," she reported. "Even Dr. Lucy Jones said there was about a 5% chance of a much larger aftershock, so I think many people are going to be breathing a sigh of relief that hopefully that was the final quake."
