Pope Francis: A Pastor Who Shaped the World’s Heart
In a grand and surprisingly personal farewell, the world bid adieu to Pope Francis, a humble leader who preferred a simple wooden coffin to a grand, ornate one. A quarter million people gathered in St. Peter’s Square and surrounding streets to pay their respects to the pontiff, many of whom had never had the privilege of meeting him. Among them was Father Jim Lan, a priest who was moved by Francis’ extraordinary example.
"Francis was an example to me of gentleness, kindness, invitation, and hospitality," Father Lan said. "He was an example to me of a good shepherd."
The powerful were also in attendance, including President Donald Trump, former President Joe Biden, and Prince William. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was the only world leader to receive applause. In an unusually personal homily, the dean of the College of Cardinals, Giovani Batista Re, praised Francis’ vision of the Church as a home for all, reaching out to those society shunned, including refugees. Re quoted Francis’ plea to "build bridges, not walls," a message that resonated deeply with Luke Carlo and Brett Ross, students studying to be priests in Rome.
A Message of Comfort and Guidance
Luke recalled Francis’ message of comfort and guidance: "I know you’re trying. God is a God of mercy, so if you fall, I can help you. The Church helps you." Brett remembered Francis’ advice on living in Rome: "Rome is like a really good bottle of whiskey – you should enjoy it, but not have too much."
A Final Procession
Pope Francis had one last ride in his beloved electric "popemobile," a procession of faith that drew cheers from 150,000 people as it made its way to his beloved Basilica Santa Maria Major, where he was laid to rest 12 years ago.
Visits to the Tomb
The world has asked Pope Francis to pray for them, and those seeking to do the same can start from tomorrow. The tomb of Pope Francis will be open for visitation, and later in the day, the cardinals will gather to pray a rosary.

As the world says goodbye to Pope Francis, his legacy will continue to shape hearts and minds around the globe. As the NBC News reporter in Rome, Ann Thompson joins us to share more on this poignant farewell.
