Arsenal Aim to Make History in Champions League Semi-Final
Mikel Arteta has called on Arsenal to continue their "beautiful story" and make history as they take on Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal have reached the last four of the competition for the first time since 2009, and Arteta is urging the home crowd to bring their "boots" to the game. He believes that the energy from the fans will be key in helping the team to achieve their goal of winning the Champions League.
"This is a special moment for us, and we want to make it even more special," Arteta said. "We have the opportunity to write our own history, and we want to grasp it with both hands.
"Everybody who comes to the Emirates tomorrow, and everybody following us, I hope they bring that energy with them. It’s going to be one of the biggest games the Emirates has seen since we built it, and we want to make it a special one."
Arsenal have never won the Champions League, and Arteta believes that the current side has the potential to bring the trophy to the club. He is confident in the team’s ability to overcome their opponents in the semi-final and believes that their strong defense will be a key factor in reaching the final.
"I believe that Arsenal has the potential to do it, but of course, once you get to this stage, it’s going to be a challenge," Arteta said. "But I believe that our solid defense will play a big part in our success over the next two legs."
The Key to Success
Arsenal’s opponents, Paris Saint-Germain, have never lifted the Champions League, but they have beaten all four Premier League clubs on their way to the last four. Their head coach, Lewis Enrique, appears to dismiss the suggestion that the Premier League is the best in the world.
"Maybe it’s a question for Mr. A. but I think in terms of confidence, it’s very positive for us because we could won the match against Liverpool and Liverpool won the Premier League this year but doesn’t mean anything because every single match is different," Enrique said.
Arsenal will be looking to repeat their 2-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain from the group phase back in October, but former Arsenal midfielder Freddy Lumbberg believes that the French champions have improved since then.
"They play great football, obviously, and especially against Liverpool at home as I think for Arsenal if they can get a few goals and not concede at home because I think PSG is very good at home, like I said, and Arsenal’s way of playing football it’s quite defensively strong on set pieces which is quite vital when you do a head-to-head game," Lumbberg said.
Can Arsenal Go All the Way?
Arsenal are currently the favorites to win the Champions League, with a 31.3% chance of lifting the trophy, according to the OPA supercomputer predictor. Lumbberg believes that the team has the potential to go all the way in the competition and make history by winning the Champions League.
"I think they have a great, great side, and I think everybody a little bit disappointed about by the league, but this is their chance and I think they can do it," Lumbberg said. "There are so many players that can hurt them, but obviously, you have the set pieces where I think that can hurt them and will hurt."
