Disturbing Case Unfolds in New Jersey: Teen Escapes Years of Captivity and Abuse

New Jersey authorities are reeling from the shocking discovery of a 18-year-old woman who was allegedly held captive and subjected to years of physical and sexual abuse by her stepfather and mother. The victim, who has not been named, told police that she was locked in a dog crate for over a year and was only released periodically to use the bathroom.

Imagine a Life in Squalor

According to the authorities, the victim was forced to live in a home that was infested with animals, including dogs, chinchillas, and other animals. The living conditions were described as filthy and squalid, with the victim being chained up in a padlocked bathroom and only allowed out when family members visited.

Abuse Began in 2018

The alleged abuse began in 2018, when the victim’s mother removed her from school, citing plans to homeschool her. However, authorities claim that the mother’s true intentions were to keep her daughter captive and subject her to abuse.

Escape and Arrest

Thanks to the help of a neighbor, the 18-year-old victim was able to escape from the home. Police have not released details of how she managed to escape, but say that the details will come to light later in the week.

The mother, Brenda Spencer, and stepfather, Brandon Mosley, have been arrested and charged with a range of crimes, including first-degree kidnapping, aggravated assault, and endangering the welfare of a child. Mosley, who is 41, has additional sexual abuse charges.

Law Enforcement Calls Case "Despicable"

The chief of police, who has been following the case, described the abuse as "despicable," one of the worst he has seen in his entire career.

Prosecutor Highlights Flaws in Homeschooling System

The prosecuting attorney has emphasized that this case highlights some of the flaws in homeschooling in New Jersey, where there is a lack of oversight and accountability.

Arraignment Scheduled for Friday

The accused are scheduled to appear in court on Friday for a detention hearing. An attorney for the couple has declined to comment on the case.

Other Children May Have Been Affected

Police are also investigating reports that a 13-year-old child was removed from the same school and may have also been the victim of abuse.
