In Video: Gilberto Silva reflects on Arsenal Invincibles season and what he feels Arteta's side is missing
What a Treat We Have for You This Afternoon!
Join us on Total Football as we sit down with none other than Jabetto Silva Jabberto, the Brazilian football legend who won the 2002 World Cup and went on to become an Arsenal legend, part of the invincible team in 2004.
A Memory to Cherish
As we celebrate 21 years since Arsenal’s incredible unbeaten season in the league, Jabetto shares his enduring memory of that time. "One of the things I really like to remember is our position in the tunnel before we go to the field. We stand there, especially at Highbury, which was a very narrow space. You know, basically shoulder-to-shoulder. Many times I have the perception that we start to win the game in that particular position on the tunnel. The way the opponent teams look at us… this was my impression."
Leadership on the Pitch
Jabetto shares his thoughts on leadership, noting that everyone has their own view on the subject. "It’s about the character of every member of the squad, the way they behave. If people respect you, regardless of whether you’re captain or not, that’s leadership." He reflects on his own time as captain at Arsenal, stating, "I wasn’t the most outspoken dressing room in the team, but my behavior, my attitude, my day-to-day training, and the way I treat people make everyone say, ‘Okay, this is the one you know I have to respect.’"
The Current Era of Arsenal
Jabetto weighs in on the job that Mikel Arteta has done in his five seasons at the helm. "I think he has done a great job… people say, ‘Oh, he hasn’t won,’ but the job he has done from the moment he came to the club, which was a little bit tough, up to now has been great." He notes that the team is close to achieving their goal but admits that something is missing. "What have you done wrong? Or what is missing from us that we didn’t do this season? The other teams did better because they were so close, you know."
Can Arteta Lead Arsenal to Glory?
Underscoring the importance of injury luck, Jabetto suggests that Arteta’s management has been impacted by the injuries to key players. "Maybe if those guys were available, they could have lost as well. But it’s a different scenario when you have everyone available." Nevertheless, he believes that Arteta has the potential to lead the team to glory, stating, "I think it makes the run to the European Cup semi-finals and that win over Real Madrid, both home and away, all the more remarkable."
