In Video: 'No threat to this community': LA County Sheriff offers details on fatal explosion

Tragedy Strikes the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department

At approximately 7:30 a.m. this morning, an explosion occurred at the Arson Explosives Detail facility located in the 1000 block of Northeastern Avenue in East Los Angeles, resulting in the tragic loss of three sworn sheriff’s department members.

Devastating Loss of Life

Unfortunately, this incident marks the largest loss of life for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department since 1857. The three members who lost their lives were assigned to the Arson Explosives Detail and collectively had served their community for 74 years. Their years of service were 19 years, 22 years, and 33 years, respectively. The names of the deceased will not be released at this time out of respect for their families, who are still being notified and supported by the department.

Prioritizing Families and Employees

Sheriff’s Department officials have prioritized two main focus areas in the aftermath of this tragedy: supporting the families of the fallen members and ensuring the well-being of their employees.

“My priority is the families of our deputies,” the sheriff emphasized. “I’ve met with several of them this morning, and I will continue to meet with all of them to provide support and resources during this difficult time.”

The second priority has been to care for the department’s employees, who are understandably struggling with the loss of their colleagues. Members of the Special Enforcement Bureau and Arson Explosives Detail are among those affected, and the department is working to provide counseling and other support services.

Investigation Underway

The Homicide Detectives are currently investigating the causes of the explosion, assisted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and other law enforcement agencies. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) is also involved in the investigation.

“I am grateful to the bomb squad of the Los Angeles Police Department for immediately responding to assist in rendering the devices safe,” the sheriff said. “Their efforts have stabilized the scene, allowing us to begin our investigation and ensure public safety.”

Ensure Public Safety

While the investigation is ongoing, the department has closed off the specific area due to the ongoing investigation. However, officials have assured the community that there is no threat to their safety.

“We believe there is no threat to this community,” the sheriff emphasized. “This is an active crime scene, and we will do everything necessary to ensure that justice is served.”

As the investigation continues, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is committed to supporting their families, employees, and the community, while also ensuring that those responsible for this tragic event are held accountable.
