In Video: Gov. Wes Moore welcomes ‘federal support’ but not National Guard to Baltimore: Full interview
Governor Wes Moore Defends Public Safety Measures in Maryland
During a recent appearance on “Meet the Press,” Governor Wes Moore of Maryland defended his state’s public safety measures in the face of criticism from President Trump. Moore emphasized that his administration has made significant investments in local law enforcement and has seen a 10% decrease in assaults with a deadly weapon in Baltimore, despite what he characterized as a lack of support from the federal government.
When asked about the President’s threat to send in federal troops to more cities, Moore was firm in his opposition, citing the negative impact on public safety and the state’s own successful efforts to reduce crime. “We didn’t mobilize the National Guard for it,” he said, adding that the administration has focused on using data-driven approaches to drive down crime rates.
Tampering with Vaccine Policies
Moore also addressed the controversy surrounding vaccine skepticism and limitations on access to vaccines. He revealed that Maryland will continue to apply its existing vaccine policy, which has been in place since December 31st of last year. “We’re not going to give into conspiracy theorists,” he said, emphasizing the importance of data-driven decision-making.
Moore expressed support for the public health measures taken by his administration, which have ensured an ample supply of vaccines for the state’s residents. He called on other states to follow suit, saying “I do feel for the people in these other states who are having to go through this chaos.”
Redistricting
The Governor also discussed the contentious issue of redistricting, which has been a major battleground in several states. Maryland, which was praised for adopting a fair map in the past, is now considering changes to its congressional map. When asked about the possibility of redrawing the map, Moore declined to rule it out, citing the need for competitive races in Congress.
Moore emphasized the importance of fair districting, noting that less than 10% of all congressional districts are currently competitive. He suggested that Maryland should be able to reevaluate its map in accordance with changes made by other states.
Announcement of Re-election Bid
The Governor was also asked about his plans for re-election, saying that he is “excited about serving the people of Maryland” but refusing to commit to serving a full term. When asked if he ruled out re-election, Moore simply expressed his excitement about the progress made in the state and his desire to continue making a positive impact.
