Erosion of Safety: The Rise of Political Violence in the US
Over the past decade, the United States has witnessed an alarming escalation in political violence against elected officials. A Growing Problem
In the 18 months leading up to 2015, there were only two incidents of political violence against elected officials. However, in the 10 years since, the number has risen to 25. The Capitol Police have reported a significant increase in the number of cases involving members of Congress, with as many as 14,000 cases reported in the last year alone. This is the highest number since the Capitol Police began releasing these statistics eight years ago.
A Shift in Security Protocols
As the numbers suggest, the safety of lawmakers is becoming an increasingly pressing concern. The aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s assassination has led to a complete overhaul of the way lawmakers think about security. Many have spoken out about the need for rethink their participation in outdoor events, citing the risk as the main factor.
“I won’t be attending any outdoor events anymore,” one public official confessed. “It’s a risky deal. You’re always on your toes, always on edge. I think we need to reconsider our stance on outdoor events because of what happened yesterday in Butler.”
Financial Resources Are Insufficient
While some lawmakers have access to private security and enhanced upgrades to their homes, the question remains whether these measures are sufficient. The additional monies provided to lawmakers after the recent assassination in Minnesota are set to expire at the end of the month, and lawmakers argue that more is required.
“It’s not just about the resources,” one representative stated. “It’s about the approach we take. We’re throwing a lot of money at a problem that existed in a bygone era. We need to reevaluate our security protocols and think creatively about how to approach this issue.”
A Complex Problem
The security of lawmakers is a multifaceted issue that cannot be addressed simply by throwing more money at it. The existing protocols and procedures may be outdated and inadequate for today’s threats. A comprehensive review of security measures is underway to address the growing concerns, but it remains to be seen whether this will be enough to mitigate the risks.
