Designing Dreams Come True: Bills Quarterback Josh Allen Wears Hats Designed by Hospital Patients

For nine children at Oshai Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, a chance to get in the game took on a whole new meaning. They each designed a hat for their hero, Bill’s quarterback, Josh Allen, and got to see their artwork worn by their favorite player during the tunnel walk at home games this season. The hats are being auctioned off to benefit the Patricia Allen Fund, which supports critical care teams at the hospital.

Among the participants was 12-year-old Charlie Rustler, who has been battling cancer since last year. Charlie’s love of the Bills kept him going throughout his treatments, and a dream come true was realized when his hat was worn by his favorite player. “I felt pretty honored and I think it was super cool,” Charlie said. For his mom, Heather, and grandmother, Tony, it was a moment they would never forget. “We were just so thankful to have that opportunity for Charlie,” Heather said.

A Sense of Pride and Purpose

Mackenzie Lindsay, 15, designed her hat with sunflowers and a ribbon, representing her battle against sickle cell anemia. “It doesn’t feel real, honestly,” she said. “Like I didn’t expect it would raise so much money and I’m glad it did cuz it’s going for a good cause and I’m just glad I’m able to be a part of that.” Her mom, Shaki, beamed with pride at her daughter’s accomplishments. “It’s amazing because she goes through so much but she does it with so much grace. So to see her get recognized, it’s surreal,” Shaki said.

A Shout-Out from Allen

McKenzie received a special shout-out from Allen himself when he thanked the kids for their artistry. “That is awesome. I wish I could draw like that,” he said. Allen told NBC Sports this week that wearing the hats designed by these children who are going through some of the hardest situations imaginable is a pretty cool feeling. “A little extra love for these fans,” he said.

High Hopes for the Team

When asked about his hopes for the Bills this season, Charlie exclaimed, “I hope they win the Super Bowl and get to shine alongside their favorite team. Go Bills. Go Bills!” For these young patients, designating hats for Allen was a way to show their love for the team and get a chance to shine themselves.
