NBA Widens Investigation into Betting Scandal, Seeks Access to Cell Phones and Documents
The National Basketball Association (NBA) has expanded its investigation into a betting scandal that has rocked professional basketball, seeking access to cell phones and phone records from multiple teams, according to a new report from The Athletic.
The investigation, which was first reported in October when federal prosecutors charged over 30 individuals in a poker and betting scheme, has now widened its net to include teams that were not previously listed in the indictment. The NBA has hired a law firm to investigate the matter and is expected to seek documents from at least 10 Los Angeles Lakers employees, The Athletic reported, citing six league sources.
The Los Angeles Lakers declined to comment on the matter, but the NBA issued a statement saying that “a number of different individuals and organizations were asked to preserve documents and records, and everyone has been fully cooperative.”
Wider Net Casts
This latest development is seen as a significant expansion of the investigation, which has already led to serious accusations across professional sports. Just last week, two Cleveland Guardians pitchers were indicted after allegedly rigging their pitches in a two-year betting scheme. Attorneys for both men have denied the charges.
“This is definitely a wider net,” said a source familiar with the investigation. “This is going to teams that were listed in the indictment, and we didn’t know about, asking them for records and documents.”
The NBA’s decision to seek access to cell phones and phone records is seen as a move to get to the bottom of the betting scandal, which has raised concerns about the integrity of professional sports.
“We can’t get to a place where we are not trusting what’s happening on our courts and on our fields,” said an NBA official. “So yeah, this is in everybody’s best interest to get a handle on this.”
Senators Weigh In
The NBA’s investigation has also received support from a bipartisan group of senators, who wrote a letter to the league last month urging them to take action.
“We are concerned about the allegations of improprieties in the NBA and the potential impact on the integrity of the game,” the senators wrote. “We urge you to thoroughly investigate these allegations and take appropriate action to protect the integrity of the game.”
The NBA has responded to the letter, saying that it is taking the matter seriously and is working to get to the bottom of the allegations.
Online Betting and its Consequences
The betting scandal has raised serious concerns about the impact of online betting on professional sports. Many experts believe that the ease with which people can now place bets online has created a culture of corruption and has made it easier for individuals to engage in illegal activities.
“We’re seeing a lot of problems in professional sports right now, and a lot of it is driven by the fact that people can place bets online with ease,” said a sports attorney. “It’s creating a culture of corruption, and it’s making it easier for people to get involved in illegal activities.”
The NBA’s investigation is ongoing, and it is expected to take several months to complete. The league has promised to take swift action against any individuals found to be involved in the betting scandal.
