A Man of the Moment: Andy’s Journey

Andy has come a long way since that tweet in 2012, proclaiming that life was rubbish at 21 with no money. Now, at 31, he’s a stalwart of the Scotland national team, and his country’s qualification for the World Cup has been a remarkable achievement.

Looking Forward, Not Back

Andy attributes his success to his ability to look forward, not back. “I always look forward,” he says. “I don’t look back too much. Once I retire, I’ll maybe sit down with you and we can go through every little bit of detail, but now, you have to look forward.” He believes that if you stop to look back, you’ll get left behind in the fast-paced world of football.

Balancing Life in the Fast Lane

Andy recognizes the importance of switching off from football and finding balance in his life. As he’s grown older, he’s learned to prioritize self-care and take time for himself. “It’s hard to get the right balance within your life,” he admits. “But I think more the older you get, the more years you’re involved in it, you have to find the things that help switch you off from football and take you away from that.”

The Power of the Shirt

Andy’s shirts were still on the following day after the World Cup qualification, and he’s grateful for the support of his family, friends, and fans throughout his journey. He believes that the shirt will be kept for a long time, and he’s proud to have been a part of something special. “It was one of the more special nights for our country,” he says.

Setting an Example for the Next Generation

Andy is aware of the impact his achievements can have on younger players. “I think it will definitely help Scotland in 20 years’ time, you know, become a better even better nation,” he says. “And that we don’t have to wait 28 years to qualify for another World Cup. And that’s the aim we’ve got to get to.”

Staying Relevant at 31

Andy recognizes that, as a player, he’s constantly under scrutiny and pressure to perform. He believes that his early 30s have been kind to him, and he’s grateful for the chance to continue contributing to his team and country. “I still believe I’ve got a lot to offer in football,” he says.

Staying Present

Andy’s approach to life is to live in the moment and enjoy the journey. He doesn’t look beyond the next game or the next challenge. “I think football happens so fast,” he says. “But I don’t look beyond any one moment. I just try and enjoy the moment and um I also look forward to what’s ahead.”

The two players, now successful with different clubs, still stay in touch and bump into each other whenever possible. “We still see Harry,” Andy says. “He’s a fantastic player, fantastic person as well.”
