BREAKING NEWS: Sheffield Wednesday FC Hit with Further Six-Point Deduction for Breaching EFL Financial Rules
Club on Brink of Relegation as Championship Table Chaos Ensues
In a devastating blow to the struggling Sheffield Wednesday FC, the English Football League (EFL) has announced a six-point deduction for the club’s continued breach of financial regulations. This latest punishment brings the total points deduction to a staggering 18, leaving the club on minus 10 points and plunged deep into relegation danger.
According to an EFL statement, the six-point deduction is a direct result of multiple breaches of payment obligations, including the non-payment of wages to players and staff. The club’s former owner, Dejphon Chansiri, will also be prohibited from owning or directing any EFL club for a period of three years.
A Rocky Road to Relegation
The latest points deduction marks the fourth penalty for the club this season. The club was initially docked 12 points for entering administration at the end of October, which was triggered by Chansiri’s decision to cease funding the club. With Saturday’s defeat at home to Preston, the Owls dropped to the bottom of the Championship table on minus 4 points. The new points deduction has propelled the team to minus 10 points, a staggering 27 points behind their nearest rivals, Norwich, who occupy 23rd place.
Sinking to League One?
With the points counting system now more daunting than ever, it’s likely that Sheffield Wednesday will be staring relegation to League One in the face by the end of the season. However, the club’s hopes for an immediate return to the Championship may be revitalized by the announcement of potential new ownership. Five interested parties have expressed interest in taking over the club, with one party set to be given exclusive bidder status this week, paving the way for a fresh start.
Further Punishments on the Horizon?
The EFL has stated that separate breaches of the rules will continue to be punished by independent commission hearings, which may lead to further points deductions. The club still faces penalties for non-payment of wages in March and May, in addition to missed payments in June, July, and September. In total, the Owls could face up to two more points deductions, increasing their overall penalty to a staggering 20 points.
A New Era Dawns for Sheffield Wednesday?
While fans hold onto hope for a new beginning, it remains to be seen how the points deductions will be translated into the remainder of the season. However, one thing is certain: Sheffield Wednesday’s chances of avoiding relegation have dwindled significantly, and a fresh start with new ownership may be their only salvation.
