Storm Wreaks Havoc in Gaza, Turning Tents into Puddles and Homes into Ruins

A two-day deluge of heavy rain has turned Gaza’s dirt roads into rivers and flooded makeshift homes, plunging the region further into despair. The worst-hit areas are those already struggling to recover from Israel’s two-year war, which destroyed 92% of Gaza’s homes. For the residents of Gaza, particularly those living in tents, the storm has brought fresh misery and suffering.

Death Toll Rises in Gaza as Storm Batters Vulnerable Population

At least a dozen people, including three children, have died in the past 24 hours due to extreme cold, collapsing walls, and buildings. This is in addition to the already dire conditions in Gaza, where residents are struggling to find food, clothing, and shelter. The Taliban-run government has reported that 27,000 of the already fragile tents were destroyed, leaving many more vulnerable to the elements.

Blocked Aid Supplies Compound Gaza’s Misery

Aid agencies, including those under the United Nations, have criticized Israeli security restrictions for limiting the flow of supplies into Gaza. While the Israeli agency overseeing aid in Gaza claims that Israel has allowed hundreds of truckloads of aid, Gaza officials say that fewer than half of the over 37,000 truckloads officially permitted have been let in. The situation has made it difficult for aid deliveries to reach those in need.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens as Permanently Scarce Housing Remains Elusive

“This storm has destroyed whatever hope we had left,” said a resident, who has not been able to provide for her family’s basic needs. Many have lost their homes, and the destruction caused by the storm has left them with even less permanent housing options. What is meant by cease-fire and reconstruction? AS this woman asked. “We’ve drowned.”

A Family Loses Their Innocent Member to the Storm

One such family has lost their dear member, a young girl, Raghad, to the cold and lack of supplies. Her uncle, Ahmed Ibrahim, says that the family opened their tent to find her lifeless body. “There are no blankets, no supplies,” he said, losing hope. “We have absolutely nothing.”

Never-Ending Suffering in Gaza

As the storm subsides, the people of Gaza are left to face the aftermath of two years of war and nearly two decades of economic stagnation. The deluge has further tested the resilience of the surviving residents, adding to their challenging lives.
