Breaking: Providence Officials Provide Update on Brown University Shooting

In a press conference, officials in Providence, Rhode Island, provided an update on the investigation into the deadly shooting at Brown University, which occurred on the night of December 4th. The shooting resulted in the loss of two lives and nine others were injured.

Person of Interest Detained

Mayor of Providence, Jorge O’liveira, confirmed that a person of interest has been detained in connection with the investigation, but declined to provide further details, stating that it was too early in the investigation to reveal too much information.

Interviews Under Way

Colonel of the Rhode Island State Police, Matthew Costa, said that the investigation is progressing quickly and that authorities are collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. When asked about the motive behind the shooting, he stated that “a situation like this, we have basis enough to bring somebody in based on a lot of different facts.”

Go-Round the Clock Emergency Response

The mayor praised the emergency services teams, including local police, fire services, and ambulance crews, who responded to the shooting in ” record time”. He also hailed the state police, federal authorities and Brown University officials for their swift response to the incident.

Community Response

The city has set up a website listing available resources for mental health care and support for those affected by the shooting. The Providence City Council and local community leaders have also come forward to offer support, with the councilman for the area inviting the community to gather at Lippitt Park for a candlelight vigil.

Governor’s Statement

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee expressed his support for the affected community, commiserating with those who have lost loved ones and offering his prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Investigation Continues

The police have warned that they are willing to proceed with the investigation to get to a place where they can make charges against those responsible. However, at this point, the investigation remains ongoing.
