In Video: Millions under weather alerts from snow and bitter cold
Winter Storm Brings Heavy Snow and Freezing Temperatures to the Northeast
A powerful winter storm is wreaking havoc across the Northeast and New England, bringing heavy snow and freezing temperatures to millions of people. Major cities such as Boston, Philadelphia, and New York are experiencing their first measurable snowfall of the season, with some parts of Pennsylvania receiving up to 13 inches of snow.
The storm has left cars stranded and roads treacherous, with plows struggling to keep up with the near-whiteout conditions. Ground stops have been declared at New York’s LaGuardia and JFK airports, with thousands of flights delayed. The severe weather is also causing concern from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast, with more than 62 million Americans now under cold weather alerts.
Football Fans Brave the Cold
The storm is not dampening the spirits of football fans, however. Work crews at MetLife Stadium in New York are clearing seats before the Giants game, while fans in Chicago are braving the cold to attend the Bears game. Some fans are taking extra precautions, wearing multiple layers, using warmers, and even using cardboard for insulation on the floor to keep their feet from freezing. Despite the extreme cold, some fans are leaving early, citing the uninviting weather conditions.
Flooding Crisis in the Pacific Northwest
Meanwhile, the Pacific Northwest is facing a flooding crisis, with heavy rain expected tomorrow. Residents are still cleaning up from last week’s flooding, and the new round of heavy rain has them worried about the potential for more damage.
Forecast: Deep Freeze to Last Longer
The deep freeze is not expected to lift anytime soon, with temperatures predicted to feel like -1° in some areas through tomorrow. The holiday travel season is set to pick up at the end of the week, and many people are hoping that the winter weather will cooperate.
